John Dubose is Retiring, David Sexton Retires

Lieutenant John Harley Dubose (above) is retiring from the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department. John was hired on August 23, 1984 and his last day will be November 1, 2007. John's last assignment was on A-Shift at Station 10 assigned to the ARFF Company. John might be best known for being a part of some of the best cartoons the fire department has ever seen. Congratulations and best wishes on your retirement John. By the way, the neighbors called and asked if you could please finish the GARAGE MAHAL!!

I would have posted Davids retirement sooner, but he had concocted some scheme of going out with a bang. He decided not to do the idea, so I figured I would post his retirement. Firefighter David Sexton was hired on January 15, 1985 and retired just recently (I don't have the date). Sexy Sexton is probably the funniest and most sadistic member of our department. His demonstrative and colorful stories are a true pleasure to watch and listen to. The first time I worked with him, I learned that he had kicked everyones ass in the department.

The department will be different without these two class clowns. Best wishes. Both pictures were taken in the early 90's.

Congratulations Dave! Always remember "Chinese Checkers" at #5 back in the '80's. You were one of the most enjoyable people I have ever worked around. With all of your intelligence and "common sense", you would have been a very good officer. Keep in touch. Have a great retirement! Gary LaPrad

Isn't it awful funny how all these guys are retiring at their rule of 70? In the not so distant past people were staying well over 30 years. When is the administration going to realize that they need to make some changes so good guys like this will stick around longer? But good luck to them on retirement, Sexton will now have more time to devote to ass kicking! LOL

I'm just glad they got a new guy at ten with a head as big as Dubose's. Someone had to carry that torch.

Congrats BIG-BOY(KIWI) on your retirement. I know you are going to miss the fire department some, right??? I am glad I got to work w/ you before your left, and don't forget Buzzy since he was the reason for all the problems at station 10. Good luck on your future adventures and I am sure everything will work out for the best.

from what I heard, Sexton was coming in to #8 on Nov. 1 to see his old buddy Renick. Must have chickened out.

Sexton, good luck with your retirement. We'll be seeing you at the Walmart on 220 as you greet the shoppers coming in. Remember, big smile...big smile.
Sincerely,
Little bitter pill.

Well I guess Dubose and Overacker can finally go on that long awaited cruise they have been talking about for so many years. I know you both are excited about this cruise and make sure you take plenty of pictures so we can all see what a great adventure you went on.

Was it the stress of working on ARFF that got to you Dubose, or was it that they just wouldn't let you back on the Haz-Mat team? I hear that the Lt and Station 9-A is going to replace you since he is already ARFF qualified, any truth to that?

Good luck John, I had a great time working with you at #10. Your pranks will be missed. David you are one of a kind and a great guy. Take care SKIPPY

According to Ralphie, Dubose can't officially retire until he sends a letter of his intentions to retire to Ralphie and does an exit interview. I can't find this in the POP's or Sogs. Must be a Ralphie rule.

Dave,
We fought fire together back in the day and had a lot of laughts along the way. Your sly wit and infectious laugh helped us through bad times.
You can hold your head high that you are among the few that didn't lose track of reality in the tragic absurdity of fire EMS.
Congratulations on your retirement.
