Update on David Bishop II

Hey guys,

I talked to David and Tracy tonight. David called to say hello and for me to give you guys an update. I have also been receiving updates through Billy Altman and David's brother Tom as well. David seems to be in good spirits. He had a biopsy on his kidney yesterday. The doctor did the biopsy to make sure everything was ok. The biopsy came back as they expected; the kidney is still in great shape and is not being rejected by his body, however it still is not operating as it should be. The doctors are very optimistic that the kidney will "turn on" any day now.

I made sure that David and Tracy knew that if they needed anything we are only a phone call away. Some of the Henrico firefighters have been by to check on him and he was gracious. David is still in the ICU, therefore it isn't too easy for us to get in to see him. Once he is out of the ICU he will be in a step-down unit and then into the apartment with Tracy in Henrico. We will be able to visit him once he is out of the ICU, which I know David will really appreciate.

Thank you for all the people who have helped out with David and Tracy and all those who have been asking about him. Terry Hauck has been taking care of the house while they are away.

Be sure to keep David and his family in your prayers.

Frank Leonard leaves for Bedford

Firefighter Frank Leonard has left the department to work for Bedford County. Frank was hired on September 22, 2003 and proved himself to be a great employee and a brother. Frank was stationed at Station 1 downtown on A-shift for his entire career (I am pretty sure). He is pictured here driving Ladder 7.

Frank will be missed and will be a huge asset to the Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue which has recently expanded to include 16 more employees.

Frank, remember if you ever need anything we will be right here for you.

Check out how the fire the other day was featured on STATer 911 Blog.

Update on David Bishop

Chief Billy Altman has been in contact with Tracy (David's Wife) and called with an update today.

Tracy is out of the hospital and staying in the apartment at the hospital. She is doing well and still recovering from the surgery.

David is still in the ICU and has been administered high doses of steroids to assist with the new kidney. His doctors are very optimistic that he is on track and his kidney will work out fine. However, right now his body is still getting acquainted with the new addition. His body is not rejecting it, it just hasn't fully accepted the kidney to 100%. The doctors expect this to occur in the following days. David is currently unable to accept phone calls, but I will let you know when he is.

If you have any questions let me know or contact Chief Altman.

The History of Firefighting in Roanoke

This video was produced by Jim Hammerstrom and Blue Ridge Public Television (Blue Ridge PBS) for the show Blue Ridge Excursions. The video is an interview with Lt. Rhett Fleitz of the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department talking about the history of the department and the book "Firefighting in Roanoke", which was authored by Fleitz. The book was a tribute to Maurice Wiseman who dedicated many years to preserving the history of the department. The video has been reproduced with permission from Blue Ridge PBS.

For those of you on Roanoke City computers, the video will not be accessible due to site limitations. The video is hosted on YouTube, which you aren't allowed to look at.

Another update

I got this email from Tom Bishop, David's brother.

Don't know if you talked with anyone today, but David and Tracey are progressing as expected. Tracey is in a lot of pain, but has been up walking. The doctor said today would probably be her worst.

David is feeling better and as expected is sore also. He is in isolation in intensive care to prevent any germs from finding their way in.

I know he will be glad to get back on his feet also.

Thanks to all the fellow firefighters for all their assistance during this ordeal. One thing I learned as a firefighter for 10 years is that when things are down you can always count on your brothers for a helping hand.

Update on the Charleston Firefighter Memorial:

5 guys from Roanoke County, 2 from Salem, and Jeremy Bennington and Jeff Oliver from the City will be in Charleston for the Memorial tomorrow. I know we all appreciate them representing us.

Captain David Bishop to undergo surgery

I just want to inform you or remind you that David Bishop and his wife will be undergoing surgery tomorrow (June 20th). The surgery will be taking place at Henrico Doctors Hospital (if I am not mistaken).

David has renal failure and will be receiving a kidney from his wife. Apparently the surgery is fairly invasive. David will have a recovery time at the hospital of two weeks, while his wife will only be admitted for one week post op. Following their time in the hospital they will have another short stay in an apartment attached to the Hospital.

Several people are keeping an eye the two, their children, and their house. I should be notified of the news after the surgery and I will pass it on to everyone. David's brother will be with him through surgery and either his mother or his wife's mother will be staying with them at the apartment. If he needs anything, he knows to call.

David has been in great spirits during this whole ordeal. I wish him and his wife a speedy recovery.

There is a memorial fund set up for the Firefighters:

Anyone wanting to donate money to the firefighters' families can make a donation at any Bank of America location or send money to: The City of Charleston Firemen's Fund, P.O. Box 304, Charleston, SC, 29402.

Information above from Charleston.net.

If you want, start "passing the hat" for the firefighters. I will coordinate the effort, as several of you have already asked about donating for the firefighters. All you have to do is get the money or checks together and put them in an envelope and get them to me directly or get them to your Union VP (J.J. Price - A, Tom Mougin - B, and Steve McFaden - C) and they will get it to me. Do not put it in the departmental mail, please get it to one of us directly. Make sure checks are made out to: The City of Charleston Firemen's Fund.

Thanks, if you have any questions let me know.

This is the least we can do.

If anyone wants to travel to Charleston to the upcoming funerals, let me know. I know of one who is already planning on going. I will post the funeral arrangements when they come in. More than likely the events will span several days.

God Bless, and Stay Safe.

Be sure to review the 2007 International Fire & EMS Safety Stand Down which is going on right now.

Antique Silver water serving pitcher

You guys have got to check this out.

THIS FIRE WATER SERVICE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION AND HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED THRU THE YEARS. THE TOTAL HEIGHT IS 21 1/2" TALL BY 12' LONG. THE URN ITSELF IS 7" IN DIAMETER AND 14" TALL AND THE CUP IS 5" TALL. THERE IS VERY ORNATE FLORAL DESIGNS THROUGHOUT AS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS. THERE IS WEAR OF THE SILVERPLATE IN AREAS DUE TO THE CONTINUED CLEANING THROUGH THE YEARS BUT THE SERVICE SHOWS VERY, VERY WELL!! THE ONLY DEFECT THAT I CAN FIND IS THAT THE URN COVER IS NOT ATTACHED AND NEEDS BE BE REPAIRED. THIS IS A VERY UNUSUAL PRESENTATION PIECE AS IT IS FROM THE ROANOKE/ RICHMOND VIRGINIA AREA. THE INSCRIPTION IS "PRESENTED TO CHIEF J S KNEPP OF THE ROANOKE FIRE DEPT BY RICHMOND DELEGATION OF THE VA FIREMEN ASSO- JUNE 20TH / (18)88". THE ROANOKE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ORGANIZED IN 1882 AS A VOLUNTEER COMPANY WITH 40 MEMBERS SO THIS ITEM NO DOUBT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PRESENTATION ITEMS OF THAT DEPARTMENT!! BOTH THE CUP AND THE URN ARE STAMPED BY THE MANUFACTURER "HARTFORD SILVERPLATE QUADRUPLE" WITH THE ASSOCIATED SERIAL #. THIS COMPANY WAS IN BUSINESS FROM 1882 TO 1894 WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED BY THE BARBOUR SILVER COMPANY. THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE SERVICE IS 9 1/2 POUNDS-- A VERY DIFFERENT AND NICE PIECE FOR YOUR COLLECTION!!THERE IS A REASONABLE RESERVE ON THIS SERVICE
This item is on ebay - you can view it here. The current price is $756. The reserve has not been met yet. I can tell you that this thing appears to be authentic and Knepp, whose name is inscribed in it, was the Chief of the Volunteers prior to McFall. McFall was the first Chief of the paid department.

Assistant Fire Marshal appointed

The word is that Ronnie "Chicken" Campbell has been appointed the position of Assistant Fire Marshal for the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department.

The official word has not been given at this time, however this came from a pretty reliable source.

Congratulations Chicken.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

From IAFF.org

Fire fighters and police officers risk their lives every day to protect the public; they deserve the same right to discuss workplace issues with their employer that the federal government grants to most other workers.

Legislation granting fire fighters and police officers minimum collective bargaining rights was recently introduced in the House by Representatives Dale Kildee (D-MI) and John Duncan (R-TN) as H.R. 980, the Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act, and will soon be reintroduced in the Senate by Senators Judd Gregg (R-NH) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA). The bills establish minimum standards for state collective bargaining laws.

Read More about this issue

The IAFF has made this issue its top priority. Be sure to follow along with the progress and contact your Senator and/or Representative to let them know you are interested in this issue. If you go to the new RFFA Local 1132 website, there is an area at the top for you to find your Senator/Representative. There is also a link on the IAFF page linked to above.

“Rescue Me has such a passionate fan base that we felt it was essential to find the right forum for members of the firefighting community and the public to be able to share their own stories. Grouper has been an invaluable partner to the entire Sony Pictures Television Marketing team in helping to create what we feel is a very organic promotional opportunity,” said Robert Oswaks, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Sony Pictures Television.

“Firehouse: Sponsored by Rescue Me” is fully supported by FX Networks and the Leary Firefighter Foundation. In order to drive content creators to the site, FX will be airing 20-second promotional ads for Firehouse during the first two weeks of the new season of Rescue Me, which starts on June 13th. Additionally, both FX and Sony Pictures Television have created tailored landing pages on their Rescue Me homepages to drive fans to Grouper where they’ll have an opportunity to create their own content. Leary and Peter Tolan, who serve as executive producers along with Jim Serpico, created the series. Michael Lombardi, Jack McGee, Tatum O’Neal, Steven Pasquale, Andrea Roth, John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata and Callie Thorne round out the show’s ensemble cast.

In 2006, Denis Leary was nominated for an Emmy® Award in the category of “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, while the previous year, both Leary & Tolan were nominated for Emmy® Awards in the category of “Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series” for their work on Rescue Me’s pilot. Patch For Fire Station 13

For a long time, I have wanted to create a patch for Station 13. After all, that is the station where I have worked the most. Tonight I was messing around with certain ideas and came up with what you see below. I knew I wanted to play off of the "Lucky 13" idea. A lot of guys have said that 13 is the "Pride of Peters Creek". I didn't mess around with that idea much due to the fact that I am confined to my knowledge of Photoshop. So here they are. Let me know what you think.

The images above have minor differences. The one below has the "Pride of Peters Creek" rocker above it. This would be easy to add to any of them.

Let me know what you think.

Fire Station 9's brand new kitchen table

Update: If you are following along with the comments, Captain Wines mentions #9's old patch that Chief Obenchain made back in the day. If you want to see it look here:
http://www.vafirenews.com/patches/region6.htm. I have posted the patch on the blog in the past but didn't feel like searching for it. RMF

Fire Station 9 finished their kitchen table recently and sent in pictures. They have produced t-shirts with the emblem that is seen on the wall at the pole upstairs. It seems as though the guys have done a great job with the table. All three shifts had their hand in completing the table.

Who will be next? Station 1, 5, and 9 have made them already. I have an idea for the big 13, I just have to find the time. Good job guys.

You guys can order the shirts and other memorabilia with their logo on it here:
