No, actually this isn't a rumor. I just cannot site any official documentation of the appointment right now. I imagine that official word will be forthcoming.

Most of the departmental postings on here are rumors. They can't be the truth until officially recognized. Chicken is the Asst. Fire Marshall now, they just haven't sent out the email yet to make it official.
