A little note on comments
Dear Anonymous,
The last time I turned of the comments, you guys complained because you couldn't post your comments anonymously. I found it entertaining the way some of you pouted around kicking the ground because you couldn't leave your comments on the blog.
After a couple of weeks I turned them back on. It seemed as though some of you all calmed down a bit and the comments became a little more constructive rather than immature, childish, and unnecessary.
I know that a lot of you all feel that your comments are hilarious. Not everyone understands your humor. Not everyone appreciates your humor.
I appreciate your understanding in this matter.

WHAT'S WRONG RHETT IS THIS NOT WHAT YOU INVISONED FOR THIS SITE. YOU HAD TO KNOW WHAT WE WOULD DO. WE LOVE TO RUN EACH OTHER DOWN. JUST LIKE THE RUMORMILL IT'S ALL IN FUN AND POOR TASTE.
Rhett, This outpouring of comments is the result of what Fire Administration has been doing for the past 12 years. They have minimalized the needs of the Firefighters, ignored their concerns. destroyed the promotion process by making it a system that rewards cronyism and non-team behavior, and lied to the public on a multitude of levels. The vast majority of employees of the Fire/EMS Department are frustrated and disillusioned by the chiefs and the City Administration. They have been gagged by Grigsby, and Ralph and his gang, with retribution if they should exercise their right to "free speech", and say anything that the city, or the department, deems to be detrimental to the Departments "point of view". The "Roanoke Rumor Mill" was the previous outlet for the frustration of the firefighters. The Department, as could be predicted, shut down access to that site from station computers. They did not, however, restrict access to that site from administration computers. They did this so they could monitor the comments on the site. That is, purely and simply, CENSORSHIP. Now, the firefighters have found a new outlet to vent their frustrations, which is your blog. You must allow the firefighters to vent here. This is necessary for the mental well being of the firefighters. I can see you pulling any posts that are "falsely slanderous", but comments about how the chiefs act, and how they run the department, are true in the eyes of the person posting the comments. There are members who have turned their backs on their brothers and sisters to further their own careers. These members should be called out and face the results of their actions. If you allow the City Administration and Fire Administration to bury the truth, and eliminate the right of free speech on this blog, as they have in the fire stations, then you have done a disservice to the firefighters, this city, this nation, and our God.
Hey Rhett,
Was Ralph's position as Assistant Chief changed to Deputy Chief? If so I believe our local by-laws state that Deputy Cheif can't be a member of the union. Enlighten us please.
Ralph has turned in his letter of resignation from the union. He said that since he was promoted to Deputy Chief he knew that he could no longer be a union member
Ralph turning in his letter is a good thing. It saved us from kicking his butt out for "wronging a brother". Heck, we could have kicked him out at least a couple dozen times, given his past record of firefighter abuse.
You dont have the balls to kick anyone out. You can not afford to lose his dues. Remember we have a building to pay for and meals and trips to send Rhett on!!
The building is paid for Dumba$$. It's been paid for. Maybe if you used this energy to benefit the union you might get to go on trips and learn more about the union and how it operates..Oh yeah I forgot you obviously know everything there is to know about union fuctions and operations
I was an active member of the 1132 local for many years, and attended more meetings than most of our members, but I was never chosen to attend any of the trips that the local sends it members, especially the trips to the IAFF Conventions. It always went to the most popular members, not the most active, or "union oriented" members. That was not exactly fair, but that is what happened. Of course, not everyone could go, but it would have been nice if active members would have, at least, had a shot at a trip or two, instead of sending the same "at large" popular members over and over again.
So, saying that if you are an active member of the local, and do things to benefit the local will give you a chance to attend distant functions is not a true statement. If you are friends with everyone in the local, and popular with the "movers and shakers", play golf with them on your days off, and laugh at their jokes, you stand a better chance at going to a convention than if you work for the local. Sad, but true.
Yes you are right as rain!
The union has it's own suck club too!
If you are in the club they will fight for you.
If you are not in the club. They won't vote for what you want or belive in, and they sure won't let you go with them to the conventions.
Our union needs to get off it's ass and start fighting administration and quit worrying about making the Chief mad so he won't promote them.
O yea!
Don't give me that crap about comoing to the meetings to see what they are doing.
I have, and it's same old crap.
Quite simply, the RFFA is what you make of it. It is only as strong and as effective as its MEMBERS make it. Every month we meet to vote on what the members want to do. Every month we meet to discuss the matters of the RFFA. Every month you get a chance to voice your opinion and your ideals for all the other interested members want to do in our business meeting. But that is just the meeting. The RFFA and your involvement in it should be an every day occurrence.
RHETT could you please tell me the number of active firefighters/officers that are not in the union? With all the bitching I see on here we should know who most of these people are, because they should be dropping out, right? I dont buy spoiled milk? Why would you pay dues each month for something you think is so bad? Think about it, not about what you can put on here about this post, but how you can help improve the RFFA or the ideas you can bring to the group, but also keep in mind the majority rules! Its pretty easy for any mature fireman to understand "Be part of the solution, or help the above and be part of the problem". Leave little Rhett alone hes doing us more than anyone has for no money in a long time. He's a historian, not a suck ass. If you are true fireman or a brother, if you want to call it that, you will help this web site to promote the department and the union, not to divide us any more than we already are! UNLESS OF COURSE YOU BELONG TO DARLENE?
Yeah right drop out. This dept and local sees it as you are with us or you are aginst us. If you drop out or never join you are black balled listed as "not a team player". No one thinks maybe he had his reasons. That it is a personal choice. Hell maybe get your side of the story. One guy needed someone to work for him. The person how already said he would was told "don't he is not in the union" so he told the guy something came up. Brother hood my a$$.
If you are the only one who thinks the union is so bad, then remember its not allways about you. If you think there are a few or alot of people that think its all to hell, then here again drop out, and then get one of the many others that supposedly think it is so bad to work for you. Better yet, look into running for office and get al these others that think its so bad to vote you in. Here again just like govt. "The majority rules". Its not all about ME!
