FIREMAN’S FUND AND CALSURANCE DONATE $50,000 TO ROANOKE FIRE – EMS DEPARTMENT ON BEHALF OF SHENANDOAH LIFE

Shenandoah Life has provided the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department with $50,000 for exercise equipment for several stations in Roanoke City. Stations 7, 8, 10, and the new headquarters station have received equipment this week. You can read about the donation on Shenandoah Life's website. Eventually all of the stations will receive state of the art exercise equipment. Station 4 and 9 have already gotten the equipment, funded by the City.
David Bocock is heading up the effort to bring the equipment into the stations. He said that the City is continually attempting to allocate funds to complete the purchase for all of the stations.

Thanks to Shenandoah Life for the equipment.

Well at least the SLOW stations will get to work out. Lord knows they sit on there butts enough as it is. Maybe this will motivate some of them to actually do something.

Check the run stats jack. They may not be the God beating heroes of #5 and #1 but 10 is ranked in the top 4 and 7 isn't dead.

Running 4 SMOKING MORE !

It would be nice to have some equipment at #6. Some equipment other than the crap someone doesn't want at there own house. And a nice place to store the weights so they don't roll up under apparatus. McFall

I wonder what would happen if we all got along?

That is a good question.

I have an observation:

All these comments and not one thank you to the people who made most of this equipment available to us.

Sure, the City might get around to purchasing the equipment for all the stations, but this sped things up.

While not everyone in the dept. has been able to experience the new equipment, eventually you will.

Maybe you guys don't realize, but to the best of my knowledge the last time we received exercise equipment it was in 1990. Almost 15 years ago. The stations were given the "Fan" exercise bikes.

Now many of us have been given better tools to keep ourselves in shape, something that was not very easy prior to the recent equipment donation and purchase by the City.

I know that most of the comments are in fun of poking at other stations. You know I will never let an opprotunity go to have a little fun.

Just remember, your coworkers aren't the only ones who read this. Eventually someone from Shenandoah Life will come across this post and read it. This post and comments will remain on the internet for an infinite amount of time.

I just hope they know we are gracious of the donation and think of us in the future if they feel like giving more to us.

Stay safe guys.

Last time I was at #13 they had equipment, maybe not bought by the city but they had some. From what I hear the guys out there run around the station with each other anyways! Maybe we could get all the stations, to send all of the old bikes to poor old #13!!

Rhett, you’re absolutely correct. Shenandoah Life & the other contributors deserve a big word of thanks for the funding of this equipment. It may lead to several of us, me included, to having a heart attack from the sudden change of lifestyle (you know fat and happy to active) but overall it will be used and appreciated. To the folks from outside the department, harmless fun gets thrown around to and about each station and isn’t meant to offend or lend the impression we do not appreciate each other or gifts/grants. The fire service has a long history of ‘fretting’ each other but most of us know it isn’t meant in a harmful fashion. In closing folks thank you very much for helping us stay in shape to help you.

you need to look back at some of the coments,Its more then fretting. The fire department is more about looking out for yur self then others. Their is very little brotherhood in roanoke. Its more about stabbing people in the back and hidding behind a screen name or being anonymous about it.We have alot of problems in this fire department some are mangement but alot of it is the guys in the firehouse!Sad

Yep, the last poster has it right. First of all, thanks to the businesses that purchased the equipment for the fire stations. You have done more for the fitness of the firefighters than the city has done. Second, the attitudes of alot of the firefighters is that they only want to look out for themselves. I don't know if that is an attitude brought about by the "step on the back of your coworker" mentality of Burcham, Grigsby, and City Council, or a generational issue where these new hires only care about what they, as an individual, can get. You can see it from the lack of attendance of the younger firefighters at the RFFA meeting. Brotherhood means nothing to them, and that is "exactly" what the city wants to see in their newer employees. The less they stick together for the benefit of all the firefighters, the easier it is for the city to screw them. The sad thing is that they are too stupid to see it.

You nailed it right there. The new hires are to blame for alot of the stuff that is happening. The problem is that this isn't their fault, it's yours and mine. Without someone to guide these new guys and help them out and show them the way things should be they get lost. You and I have spent too much of our time in the efforts to get promoted and not shown them the attention they require. This lack of attention leads the new guys to see us chasing a buggle and not helping them out and think this is the way of the service. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself not Big Red or FORMER Chief Grigsby. It's not fair to fault a man that is gone and forgotten. He did his deal and left, it's a brave new world now. Blame yourself for not fighting harder for the issues YOU think are important and YOU should've fought for long ago. YOU are to blame for the crap our department is in now, not the new guys, not the department, and certainly not the city. Fight for what you want and HELP YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS OUT. Think about picking a new guy and showing them the way you think the department should treat one another and then you can truely see that the blame is yours and mine. Appreciate changes and gifts we get, take them and enjoy, watch each other's back and stay safe.

amen Brother!! We need to start looking after each other!Brotherhood for ALL not just a few! This is OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT its time we take it back! Its not Chief Hobacks department. Its his job to led us in the right direction. Its up to every member of this department to step up and look after one another and make this job what it used to be!!!!Officers teach your company every thing you know,Old blue patch guys teach us how it used to be and how it should be!management listen to your firefighter's and officers! Firefighters work with mangement to get us where we need to be!Like it or not we are all in this together!!! Todd Stone #3

Everyone will eventually get new fitness equipment. We were fortunate to have gotten the grant from Shenandoah Life and it is much appreciated..Thank You.. The stations that did not get equipment this time please be patient. This stuff is not cheap so each time it has to go through the bidding process and then we have to sit down with the purchasing department to iron everything out. It is a long process but it becomes longer when we have to keep looking for the money to pay for the quality equipment that we have been able to get. Firefighters can break an anvil so it has to be good stuff. Again please be patient and keep up the good work. Thank you and stay safe.

First things first. A huge thank you to Shenandoah Life for the workout equipment. We are all grateful that companies like you are looking out for us.

Second. Rhett I really enjoy your site and look forward to the posts. However it bothers and infuriates me to no end that instead of focusing on the positive, people post here with the safety of anonymity and criticize others for what we should have or could have done. We need to have the mindset that we are one. That we are united in our ultimate goal of being a great department; able and willing to serve our city. What type of people constantly dwell on the negative aspects of the department? Or maybe they are just upset at life itself and are using the department as a vehicle to vent their negativity.

Sure there are obviously things we could work on but what are we accomplishing by calling each other out on here for? Do you really think you are doing any of us any favors? Like a previous post stated, HELP YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS. You are doing a tremendous disservice to each other, our union and our department by calling each other out on here. Sure, ribbing is all in good fun but I think we can all tell the difference.

So I challenge you, instead of dividing ourselves and being conquered, stand up for your brothers, have an open mind with admin. and look out for each other. Because no one else will.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to don your new spiffy VDOT vest!

I agree! Leave the negative, anonymous posts over on the Rumor Mill. They dont belong on Rhett's site. I second the thanks to Shenandoah Life for the work out equiptment and the hard work by Bo to get it for us. Something good happening for us...the worker bee's..doesent happen too often.

I feel the same way about us uniting and all that, but how do we get past the favortism and other stuff that happens on so many levels that it makes us "others" sick to our stomachs. I want better things like Moral, and everyone treated the same and not just one crew or shift getting away with things, Ya Know? I like this site just like you and Rhett I thank you for your awsome input into our department, you do a great job for our local as well. You and the other Ex. Board including Rodney do a great job for us. Thank you both.
