Update on the new Fire Station

Above - View from Elm Avenue - 3 bays

Here is the new Fire Station. From what I hear, the exterior should be nearing completion soon, so they can keep going on the interior for a Spring 2007 opening. Just thought I would show some pictures for those of you who don't frequent that area. From what I hear, the station will incorporate poles which is not very common in newly constructed fire stations.

This location makes about as much sense as if it would have been located directly on I-581. I have to wonder how many accidents it will create in the first year alone.

none, unless you tear into the intersection like an idiot...

Great looking facility. Looks like the architecture favors the Firehouse downtown a little. Which is a great-looking Station. :-)

We have good people working for the Roanoke Fire-Ems department and they will do well out of that station!Have a little faith in our Firefighters. Fire admin could give us pick ups and 5 gallon buckets and let us run out of tents,We will find a way to get the job done! I hope the union finds a way to keep the old 1 open as long as we can. Remember we are all in this together look after one another and be safe!

Our Firefighters will always do a great and professional job.

Firefighters will not cause the accidents at the new Station, the dumb a** rubber neckers will. Its a very heavy traffic area and WILL cause response problems. And sooner or later it WILL get hit by a car because it is rite on the street.

I also hope that the citizens will stand up for Historic Station 1#.

As Always, Be safe out there and take care of one another. The citizens belive in you and respect each and everyone of you. You guys and gals seem to tear each other down all the time. RE: Rumor mill etc. Thanks to the article that made the paper. Anyway, just remember you are our heros and I once heard it said, YOU HAVE THE GREATEST JOB ON EARTH!!!! Thanks for all you do..

i heard that once this station opens the city is going to close down 3 stations due to overbudjet. I hope this is only rumor because we are already so short staffed.

The job is a great job. If you have a need to help people, and have little regard for your own safety when someone elses safety is paramount, then you can do this job. However, this job is very stressful, very demanding physically and mentally. On top of that, the city of Roanoke is run by a bunch of idiots who would not know what it takes to be a firefighter if it ran up and bit them on the ass. So, the mostly great firefighters of Roanoke have developed a bit of a "chip on the shoulders" about the "whole" of the job. But, make no mistake about it, when the medical or fire tones go off, the firefighters and medics will be there, doing their best, for the citizens of Roanoke. As far as digging ditches, most "ditch diggers" work 2080 hours a year. Roanoke Firefighters work an average of 2920 hours a year. So when you "non-firefighters" start figuring how much firefighters make, remember that the work almost "half again" as many hours as you do every year. We firefighters have a right to complain when we feel abused by the city, just like anyone else does.
