Roanoke firefighter files grievance against city over job transfer - Roanoke.com

An article ran in the paper today: Roanoke Firefighter filing a grievance against the city over job transfer. The article speaks of how Mike Banks, a 31 year veteran and Captain of the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department, has filed a grievance over comments made about his website during a cluster meeting with the Chiefs of the department. Captain Banks hosts a website: www.roanokerumormill.com. The site enables firefighters, or anyone for that matter, to post comments on a message board anonymously. The firefighters have left a wide array of comments over the past 2 years on the site. During a cluster meeting last year, Banks states that he was told to take the site down by the Chiefs. The cluster meetings are held at various stations in the City so that other Companies can meet up and the Chiefs can speak to more firefighters at once. I was at the meeting that Banks speaks of and worked for Banks at the time of the meeting. I also heard that the same remark was made at other cluster meetings that day.

I do not think there are too many firefighters in the City who would disagree that there is retaliation in our work place. I am not saying it happens every day, but it happens. Most of the firefighters are not willing to stand up for even the smallest things because of the fear of retaliation.

Is this unique to Roanoke? No I do not believe so. I think this sort of thing happens in a lot of fire departments. That doesn't make it right.

The morale of the department continues to plummet. I cannot say when it started its downward spiral, but it continues. The issues like overtime, FLSA, retaliation, mandatory holdover, non-reimbursed required off-duty training, and pay have taken there toll on Roanoke's Bravest. While we have made small victories on some of these issues like getting overtime pay back we still have a long way to go. Unfortunately some of these issues are knowingly being done wrong by the City and it takes a veteran like Mike Banks to make a stand. Everyone else is running scared looking for someone else to be the poster child, and I don't blame them.

Here is another blogs take on the situation.

Roanoke firefighter files grievance against city over job transfer
Michael Banks says he was transferred in retaliation over his controversial Web site.

A career Roanoke firefighter has filed a grievance against the city, saying he was transferred from his old job as retaliation for his refusal to take down a controversial Internet site.

Roanoke Fire-EMS Capt. Michael Banks hosts www.roanokerumormill.com, a Web site where some Roanoke firefighters anonymously air their complaints about management. People post on the site "because they're afraid to say something personally," Banks said. "It's just an outlet for people."

City officials assert that Banks' transfer had nothing to do with the Web site. "Absolutely not," said acting Fire-EMS Chief David Hoback.

On June 2, Banks was reassigned from the airport fire station, where he had served for more than seven years, to the station on Riverland Road. Banks, 54, has worked for Roanoke Fire-EMS for more than 30 years, attaining the rank of captain in 1992.(Read the rest of the article)

I heard the chief lied in court like he lies to his men.

Guess we will have to start video taping our cluster meetings so we can help the chiefs remember what they did and didnt say!!!!

You got that right!

Anonymous said...

It might have been taped and besides there were about 20 firefighters there that heard what was said.

regardless of what it seems like, you always have the support of the public..

to hell with darlene "burn 'em" burcham

What public support. I know everyone "feels your pain". Until someone in the public speaks up in a public forum,we will continue to be labeled as "discontents", "cry baby firemen", "afraid of change", "lucky to have a job" and other distinguished labels!

If your so unhappy why don't you take your old, grumpy self and RETIRE...and yes I won't put my name on this since that is the way you and fleitz, and the rest of the clowns off the mill lie to play.. you don't show backbone by crying like a child, haven't you been told you get nothing by crying...what are you too lazy to run a call thats why you don't like it at 11, god knows arff does't run a call, listen to fleitz cry... man up if it is punishment for the mill you deserve it...it made this department the laughing stock of all the fire depts. good job if you cry hard enogh maybe they will give you an RO.

Well, I can imagine who this is. You know what the problem is that I have with this? You show no respect. How do you plan on having any respect left to yourself or your seniority or career with comments like this? Captain Banks has been in the Fire Department for 31 years and he feels he has been served an injustice. That is the facts. Remember that if anything ever happens to you.

And as far as the ARFF questions go all I have to say is that I hope you don't end up there. Because you will not have a leg to stand on if you are not happy.

I must admit if I was not on ARFF I would not be able to...

But don't tell nobody. Ha Ha Ha.

I've said it before and will say it again, ARFF is the highest paying job in the dept. You make more per call than anyone else. : )

Sounds like BK. You know, the one who never reads this or the Rumor Mill site. So what, are you NOT proud of the "old Fire Dept"? You know, the one you wanted and worked so hard to get hired into. And I must correct you on the crying statement. You cried enough to the Chief to have the Rumor Mill blocked from the stations, so crying must work at times. And yes, Banks is a 31 yr vet of this and the old Dept and has run more than his share of calls. Spent alot of his time right where youre stationed, #6. And at that time, they were a very busy company. And he never faked an injury to get out of work when the load became too heavy (you know, like when your the only medic assigned and have to ride everyday?), they tightened up their suspenders and got the job done! So yea, he's earned the right to complain.

How much is our union paying for this grievance?

FireFleitz said...

That is a good question? Come to the next meeting to find out.

you want to know how much it is costing?? if he is right and wins it does not matter. and guess what we would pay it for you if you were done wrong. and if you think it want happen to you say around long enough and i bet you find out the hard way!! Get promoted, forced to do a project on your day off, with out pay ! i hope it doesnt happen to you but if it does, just remember this I TOLD YOU SO !!!

In reference to earlier post 6 is still a very busy company. The third busiest engine and the second busiest paid medic truck. Thanks for the job you do with this site Rhett.
